Mark took me to Ari Marcopoulos' show at the Berkeley Art Museum today. Though an admirer of his work, I didn't understand why we had to be there at 3pm sharp but anyway, we get there and lo and behold, Fab Five Freddy, Keith Hufnagel, Ari Marcopoulos and Barry McGee in "conversation." I could have just dropped to my knees right then and there. After hearing them speak, I thought about how awesome growing up in NY must have been in the 70's-90's. I'm so old school about the things I like and the people that inspire me but after such a great day, I can't wait to pick up a camera and pen. These are some of Ari's images that stayed with me-

I am so turned off by mean/rude/full of nothing folks and it seems like they are ever-y where, regressing so hard core right now. While I am far from the nicest being on this planet, I love it when people can step outside of their little chambers and smile once in a while, maybe offer their seat on the bus, not fear every stranger on the street, show a little more enthusiasm for life, etc.

Yesterday I engaged in awful science jokes with my old anatomy teacher and to my surprise, I felt really funny. I then left school and felt really unfunny. This is not a quarter life crisis...

Margaret Kilgallen was truly exceptional. Every now and again, I think about art that I actually like and that I consider memorable. Her work never fails to bring me to an eerie peace. Ah, my heart is still numb.

I have a serious love/hate relationship with the Tenderloin. I love it because it's where I work and I'm proud of what I do; I hate it because children have to grow up there and I can't wear dresses... It's sorta like Zombieland, which you should see if you haven't (!!!). Maybe I've posted these before but here are some photos I took while first getting to know the neighborhood.
